In-House Workshop - Friday 4th October 2019

We had another enjoyable in-house workshop at Farnell Village Hall on Friday 4th October 2019.  Run by our local instructors, the workshop was free of charge.  In the morning the first hour was aimed at those who undertake the role of corners in the different classes and Paulines version of "Simon Says" certainly exercised the brain cells!  The rest of the day was attended by a total of 36 people, ranging from recent beginners to regulars of long standing.  The instruction focused on various aspects of the early moves and everyone left with at least a little more understanding.  After a very sociable soup and sandwich lunch, there was time for another slow set before the afternoon drew to a close.  Thanks go once again to our instructors.

International Workshop at Farnell, 9-11 May 2019

This 3-day workshop was with international instructor Willem van Engelen from Tai Chi Academie Weert in the Netherlands. Over the three days Willem focused on Balance and Relaxation; two important components which are vital in helping us to master all the exercises and the set.  These concepts were illustrated by working through the exercises and the first 17 moves, breaking them down into small sections to show where the balance should be.

Although many people came only for one day, the turn out was good, with between 20 and 30 people attending each day, including Willem and the four ladies from the Netherlands.  As usual there was a lot to take in, but it was a very friendly and enjoyable workshop.

Tai Chi on the Beach - Thursday 18th April 2019

As the Montrose hall was not available for classes just before Easter, we had our annual morning at the beach on Thursday 18th April.  About 30 members from various classes met at the Montrose promenade at 10am for some open air Tai Chi.  It was quite a bright day although somewhat bracing, but was invigorating and a very sociable occasion.  After a couple of sets on the beach the morning was topped off with refreshments and a natter at East Coast Burgers on the promenade.

Half day Workshop 15th March 2019

Our in-house workshop in Farnell Hall on Friday, 15th March was very well attended, with about 50 members turning up on a bright but very blustery morning.  The attendees ranged from recent beginners to those who had been doing Tai Chi for many years, so the morning focussed on the correct postures for Donyus and Toryus and incorporating this into the first 17 moves.  The refreshment breaks and the soup and sandwich lunch allowed plenty of time for the members of different classes to mingle and socialise and completed an enjoyable morning.

International Workshop 20th - 22nd August 2018

Close on the heels of Ben's workshop we had another workshop with an international instructor, also at Farnell Village Hall, this time led by Hanneke Verduyn of the Kin San Tai Chi Academy in the Netherlands. Although the main focus was on the Tai Chi set, Hanneke also introduced the Qigong Brocade, which was new to many of us.

Qigong is another ancient form of Chinese health and longevity exercise, which pre-dates Tai Chi by a few thousand years. The Qigong Brocade is a series of eight slow, flowing exercises practised by millions of people for exercise and relaxation, for meditation, as part of an alternative medicine program or as training for martial arts.

International Workshop 3rd - 5th July 2018

At the begining of July the Acadeny organised a 3 Day Tai Chi at Farnell Village Hall.  We were fortunate to have the international instructor Ben Chung of the Zhong Wen Taiji Academy in Canada.  In fact this was a truly international workshop with other attendees coming from the Netherlands, Belgium, Germany, Canada and even England!

Ben was a disciple of our late Sifu Master Moy Lin-Shin, who modified the Yang Style Tai Chi 108-move set by emphasizing turning, stretching, rising and falling to develop the style of Tai Chi we practice. The workshop focused on the soft side of Tai Chi (Yin Movements), with the emphasis on the internal movement driving the moves and Ben spent a long time breaking down the early moves to illustrate this.  As always the workshop was quite intense and hard work, but it left us with a lot to think about and some new international friends.
